In the IELTS Writing Task 2, you need to write an essay of at least 250 words on a given topic. Examiners assess your writing through four key areas: task response, coherence and cohesion, lexical resource, and grammatical range and accuracy. To perform well, it’s important to understand the common essay types that appear in the test. The main types are: opinion (agree or disagree), discussion (both views), problem and solution, advantages and disadvantages, and double question essays. Each requires a different structure and approach.
For opinion essays, clearly state your view and support it with examples. In discussion essays, discuss both sides fairly before giving your opinion. Problem-solution essays need you to identify causes and suggest practical solutions. Advantages and disadvantages essays should present both sides equally, ending with your opinion if asked. Finally, double question essays require answering two separate parts, so organise your paragraphs carefully. To succeed in IELTS Writing Task 2, always plan your essay, use linking words naturally, and develop each idea clearly. Reading model answers and practising each type will build confidence and help you write with better structure and focus.
