Hi everyone,
I'm working on a personal essay that touches on themes like grief, healing, and personal growth. I'm finding it really hard to strike the right emotional tone—especially when choosing words that won't feel too dramatic or too bland. For example, I'm stuck between using "devastated" vs. "heartbroken," or "moved on" vs. "learned to live with the pain."

How do you all decide which word carries the right weight in emotionally charged writing? Do you have any tips or tools that help with this process—maybe a checklist, a gut feeling, or do you rely on peer feedback?

Would love to hear your thoughts or examples from your own writing.
Thanks in advance!
