If you're ready to enter the world of ABA therapy, becoming a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is an excellent place to start. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you go from signing up for an RBT training course to becoming fully certified.
Meet the Eligibility Requirements: You must be at least 18 years old, have a high school diploma or equivalent, and pass a background check.
Enroll in a 40-Hour RBT Training Course: Choose a course that is BACB-approved and covers all sections of the RBT Task List, including measurement, behavior reduction, documentation, and ethics. You can complete this online or in person.
Complete the Training: Dedicate enough time to grasp the material. Many courses are self-paced and include videos, quizzes, and practice scenarios.
Pass the RBT Competency Assessment: This is a live evaluation conducted by a BCBA where you’ll demonstrate your ability to apply what you’ve learned.
Submit Your Application to BACB: This includes your training certificate, assessment results, and required documents.
Schedule and Take the RBT Exam: Once your application is approved, take the official RBT exam through Pearson VUE. You must pass to become certified.
Get Hired and Start Working: With certification in hand, you can start working as an RBT in a clinic, school, or home setting.
By following these steps and committing to your training, you'll be well on your way to a rewarding and meaningful career as a Registered Behavior Technician.
