Today I wanted to share a bit about a cool group of animals called Testudines. You might not know the word Testudines, but you've surely seen them – they’re turtles, tortoises, and terrapins!
Testudines are reptiles with hard shells that protect them like armor. They’ve been around for millions of years and live in all sorts of places – in the sea, rivers, and even dry land.
They have a hard shell on their back (called a carapace) and one underneath (called a plastron).
They don’t have teeth! Instead, they have strong beaks to bite and chew food.
Most Testudines are slow movers, but they can be strong swimmers.
They lay eggs, and most babies have to take care of themselves once hatched.
Some live a very long time even over 100 years!
It’s amazing how they’ve adapted to different environments while keeping their unique body shape. Whether it’s a sea turtle swimming in the ocean or a tortoise walking slowly on land, Testudines are truly one-of-a-kind.
Do you have a favorite kind of turtle or tortoise? Let’s chat about them!
